9-11 Special Minors Tournament Recap
Keenan, Michael and Dheva combined to throw a one-hitter, and the Fairfax American 9-11 Special Minors All-Stars broke open a close game against Fairfax National with a six-hit, four-run fifth inning, winning 15-1 at Thaiss Park on Tuesday night for the District 10 title.
The AL team went ahead 2-0 in the first on RBI singles by Michael and Dheva. But NL pitcher Nathan held the AL scoreless for the next three innings, and Fairfax National scored on a wild pitch in the third to make it 2-1.
The Fairfax American offense broke out in the fifth with five consecutive singles by Ezra, Keenan, Michael, Dheva and Evan to make it 4-1. An RBI fielder’s choice by Shivam and a run-scoring single by Griffin extended the lead to 6-1. Then Fairfax American poured it on in the sixth, sending 14 batters to the plate and scoring nine runs to put the game out of reach. Keenan and Michael had back-to-back doubles early in the inning.
Michael finished 4-for-5 with five RBIs, leadoff batter Griffin also went 4-for-5, and Keenan and Dheva had three hits apiece. Starting pitcher Keenan struck out three in two scoreless innings, Michael struck out four while allowing one unearned run in the next three, and Dheva closed it out by striking out two in the sixth.
Evan had the only hit for Fairfax National, a one-out single in the second.
Fairfax American went 3-0 in the three-team tournament, beginning with an 18-3 win over Fairfax National. The AL squad scored three runs in the first inning, four each in the second and third, and seven in the fifth to win 18-3. Asher went 2-for-2 with a triple, Dheva went 2-for-2 with a double, Keenan went 2-for-2 with a double, Devin had a triple and Ezra had two hits for the relentless Fairfax American offense. On the mound, Keenan, Michael and Shivam combined to allow two earned runs on five hits in four innings. Kirk and Billy each had two hits for Fairfax National.
Fairfax American then had to rally late in its second game, a 15-14 victory over ANSLL. The AL squad trailed 14-10 entering the sixth when Evan led off with a walk and Michael drove him in with a double. Two more walks followed, and Shivam lined a run-scoring single. Then Ezra tied it with a line-drive two-run double, and Shiva put the AL ahead with an RBI single up the middle.
Although ANSLL had scored at least one run in every inning to that point, Keenan made the one-run lead hold up, striking out the side in the bottom of the sixth. Shivam finished the game 4-for-5, and Dheva and Evan each went 3-for-4.
